Hi, thank you for visiting the campaign website.

The election is drawing near and there is so much to do. I have been out speaking to groups, walking precincts, meeting voters and putting up signs. The Cloverdale Citrus Fair Parade was great fun, and there are several new events coming up, so be sure to visit the events page.

Everywhere I go I am asked about my stand on electronic voting – so here it is…… I am an advocate of paper-based voting systems and have always insisted on the necessity of a voter-verified paper audit trail. I do not believe electronic voting is a good use of technology for the general public. The questions no one has been able to answer for me is: “Why would you spend millions of dollars for equipment that will sit on the shelf 363 days of the year only to become obsolete in 5-10 years? And when it is obsolete, what will we do with it? We certainly can’t deposit it in the landfills!” I have every intention of continuing to use our current paper-based, optical scan voting system. We have used this system over 20 years. It is tried and true, and works very well for absentee voting, which comprises over half of the ballots cast.

I do believe that adaptive technology that allows voters with disabilities to fully participate in the democratic process is a good use of technology. Therefore, Sonoma County will meet the disability access requirements of the federal Help America Vote Act by supplementing our current voting system with one unit per precinct on which a voter with disabilities can vote in privacy. While these units are electronic, they are not touchscreens, and they are equipped with a voter-verifiable paper audit trail. Further, I intend to duplicate the votes cast on this equipment onto our regular optical scan ballots and count them in the usual manner.

I want to be your next County Clerk-Recorder-Assessor, but remember, I can’t do this alone. We still need volunteers to walk precincts, host 'meet the candidate' events and make phone calls. And I need your contributions…… please help in any way you can.

Thank you,

Janice
